I completely agree with your statement that maybe it was taken to an emtreme but it is higly accurate. The trend for producing news over the last several decades has gone from hard substantial news to soft sensational news. When there was only two other competitors it was more profitable to do an investigatory story but in todays world doing such a task involves time and time is money. There is a tendency to want to be entertained and the only way to do that with the news is to provide sensational information. Hard news involved too much effort because you have to aware of what already occurred and the effects of what is going on. The last thing that most people want to do is spend their lesiure time researching information.
